Error: #5.6.0 smtp;554 5.6.0 STOREDRV.Deliver.Exception:ObjectNotFoundException; Failed to process message due to a permanent exception with message The Active Directory user wasn't found

Having migrated from exchange 2007 to exchange 2010, we came across an issue sending emails to some mail enabled public folders that had been replicated to the new exchange 2010 server. The undeliverable error received by the users was.

#5.6.0 smtp;554 5.6.0 STOREDRV.Deliver.Exception:ObjectNotFoundException; Failed to process message due to a permanent exception with message The Active Directory user wasn't found.> #SMTP#

In order to fix this we had to.

1. load ADSIEdit.msc
2. Connect to the Configuration Naming context
3. Expand to CN=Configuration,CN=Services, CN=Microsoft Exchange, CN=domainname, CN=Administrative Groups, CN=First Administrative Group (or name of legacy exchange 2007 Administrative Group)
4. Right click the Servers and delete the container

Once this is done, the users should be able to email to the Public Folder again.
