How to change Windows Server 2012 product key

To change the Product Key in Windows Server 2012 do the following.

1. Press the windows key + R to bring up the run box.
2. Type "slui.exe 0x3" in the run box and click ok
3. Type in the new product key in the Windows Activation window and click "Activate".

Adding a Terminal server to the SBS Remote Web Workplace (RWW / RWA)

On a SBS 2011 or SBS 2008 server, if you want to add a Terminal Services server in Application mode to the Select Computer drop down list in Remote Web Workplace do the following:

1. logon to the SBS server

2. click on start and select run

3. in the run box type regedit

4. goto the following registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARE\Microsoft\SmallBusinessServer\RemoteUserPortal
If the RemoteUserPortal key does not exist, create it by right clicking on SmallBusinessServer and select New then Key, enter the name RemoteUserPortal.

5. right click on RemoteUserPortal and select New then Multi-String value create a multi-string (REG_MULTI_SZ) key called TsServerNames

6. double click the TsServerNames (REG_MULTI_SZ) key and enter the names of each Terminal Server (one per line) under Value data.

7. load the Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard Console

8. select the Network Tab, select the terminal server and click on view computer properties

9. under user access, click on the "Can log on remotely to this computer" tick box for each user that needs access to the terminal server via Remote Web Workplace

Once this is done your users should be able to connect directly to the terminal server through the RWW website.

Increase SBS 2008 and SBS 2011 exchange server email message size limit

To globally increase the Microsoft Exchange email message size on SBS 2008 and SBS 2011 to 30MB, open up a Exchange Management Shell and enter the following commands:

Set-TransportConfig -MaxReceiveSize 30MB -MaxSendSize 30MB

Set-Sendconnector "Windows SBS Internet Send yourservername" -MaxMessageSize 30MB

Set-ReceiveConnector -Identity "Windows SBS Internet Receive yourservername" -MaxMessageSize 30MB

Note: replace yourservername with the name of the server that you are running the commands on.

SBS 2008 & SBS 2011 - SBS Monitoring and reports not working - How to recreate the SBS Monitoring Database

Over the last few months we have noticed a couple of our customers SBS servers are having the following issues with SBS Monitoring and reports.

  • Reports not being generated and emailed
  • Manually generating reports causes the SBS Console to stop working with a "close console and restart" window.

Initially we just rebooted the servers and everything seemed fine but after a week or so the problem would happen again. Looking around the various SBS forums we could see that this was a widely reported issue but nothing really explained how to resolve it. The next obvious solution therefore was to either work out how to reinstall or recreate the SBS Monitoring database.

In the end we came across the following blog which explains how to recreate the SBS monitoring database.

This sure enough fixed the errors with the reports being manually generated but for some reason the scheduled reports (Summary Network Report and the Detailed Network Report) were still not running. We found by editing the reports and changing the scheduled time they were set to run fixed this.
